COACHES’/MANAGERS’ RESPONSIBILITIES
House League Games
- To cancel a game, coaches must contact Brian Gordon by calling: 416-558-0119.
For Reasons Other than Weather
- While it is preferred that coaches report game cancellations for reasons other than those related to weather 90 minutes before a scheduled game in order to provide enough opportunity for Brian to contact the assigned umpires and to ensure they haven’t left for their assignment, Brian will accept calls up to, but no later than, one hour before the scheduled game time.
(If this is not done, and umpires leave for their assignment, the Club is obliged to pay them. These payments place a burden on the Club’s budget especially when the game gets re-scheduled and umpires have to be paid again for the same game).
- Should coaches call to cancel a game with less than an hour before game time, Brian will attempt to reach the umpires in the hope that they haven’t left for their game. However, if one or both of them have left, the Club will be forced to pay any umpire who has left for his/her assignment.
- If the Club pays umpires for a game that is not played because coaches failed to report the cancellation at least one hour prior to game time, the Club reserves the right to not allow the teams involved to re-schedule the cancelled game.
Rainouts
- In situations where it has been raining or threatening to rain during the day of a game, the coach and/or an assistant coach, and or a designated parent from the home team should visit the park sometime between 90 and 60 minutes prior to game time to ascertain if, in fact it is raining and/or if the field is in a playable condition (e.g. no puddles on the infield; are the areas where pitchers and batters will be standing too muddy; etc.). The coach, assistant coach, or parent should report their findings as quickly as possible to Brian and the rest of the team along with their decision as to whether or not the game will be cancelled due to weather and/or bad field conditions.
This should provide enough opportunity for Brian to contact the assigned umpires and to ensure they haven’t left for their assignment. Brian will accept calls up to, but no later than, one hour before the scheduled game time.
(If this is not done, and umpires leave for their assignment, the Club is obliged to pay them. These payments place a burden on the Club’s budget especially when the game gets re-scheduled and umpires have to be paid again for the same game). ).

However, if one or both of them have left, the Club will be forced to pay any umpire who has left for his/her assignment.
- In situations where the teams and umpires are at the field and the weather changes such that the game must be cancelled within the one-hour time limit, it is the Home Team’s coach that makes this decision up to the time the umpires declare, “play ball”. Once play begins, the umpires are in control of the game and only the Plate Umpire has the right to suspend play, or cancel or postpone a game.
- All games cancelled to rain, bad field conditions or threatening weather will be re-scheduled whether the umpires were contacted prior to leaving for their assignments or not.
- It is imperative that all coaches know and share all of their contact information so that they can call one another to communicate about concerns, rainouts, decisions, etc.
- COACHES ARE REMINDED THAT A MINIMUM OF 48 HOURS IS REQUIRED TO RE-SCHEDULE CANCELLED OR RAINED OUT GAMES. WHILE REQUESTS FOR RE-SCHEDULING IN A SHORTER TIME FRAME WILL NOT BE GUARANTEED, BRIAN WILL DO HIS BEST TO ACCOMMODATE THE REQUEST.
Rep and Select Games
- To cancel a game, managers or coaches must contact Brian Gordon by calling: 416-558-0119.
For Reasons Other than Weather

- If the Club pays umpires for a game that is not played because the manager or coach failed to report the cancellation at least one hour prior to game time, the Rep/Select team will have to reimburse the Club for the payment of the umpires of any re-scheduled games.

UMPIRES’ RESPONSIBILITIES
- Upon getting notification of a game being cancelled or rained out, Brian will either immediately post updates on the umpire website or call the umpires affected by the cancellation/rainout or both.

- Umpires are expected to be at their assigned games one-half hour (30 minutes) prior to game time and to be dressed and on the field 10 minutes before game time.
- If umpires have not received a phone call from Brian before leaving for their assigned game, it is a mandatory requirement that they check the umpire website 45 minutes prior to game time to ensure their game is still on. This should still allow enough time for umpires to be at their assigned location no later than 30 minutes prior to game time.
- If umpires are still unsure as to whether or not they are umpiring as scheduled, they are to report to the ballpark ready to work.
